The war of 1409 to 1411 between Poland and Lithuania on one side and the Teutonic Order on the other, over the Order's eastward expansions and its attmepts to rule Samogitia, culminated in the Battle of Griunwald., not far from the Order's headquarters at Marienburg. The victory at Grunewald resulted in Lithuania uniting with Samogitia. The battle was a disaster for the Order. It marked the end of its expansion, and the beginning of its decline. The battle also transformed the balance of power in Central and Eastern Europe. As a result, the Pope and the Holy Roman Emperor, along with other powers in Europe, foresaw the further expansion of Catholic Europe to the East with the help of Poland and Lithuania.
